Istanbul is home to many handcraft techniques which are virtually extinct in Germany. Metal spinning is one of them. For this process sheet metal is shaped over a steel mold by us ing edgeless tools and a turning machine. By way of force, patience and plenty of knowl edge a simple round sheet can be turned into a three dimensional object.
This fascinating process gave way to the idea for a material that has three colours. In Lokman and Erkan Cilingir‘s workshop cop per, brass and aluminum sheets were stacked and sculpted into a series of vessels – their simple cylindrical shape contrasting their unusual materiality which is only visible at a second glance.
KAP was realized in the context of the project ISTANBUL’DAN.
